7 Weeks Old

Apologies for the delay, it's been a busy week here!

This past week we had vet checkups. We've been working on crate training, more time away from mom, and are working on eating actual hard food. They want their food mushy and are quite adamant about it, I'm thinking maybe their teeth continuing to erupt may be causing some discomfort when trying to eat the hard food. Potty training has taken a great turn and they've all been using the tray regularly. The puppies did really well in the car and at the vet--they just fell asleep the moment the car started moving and were super cooperative for Dr. Lisa. This upcoming week we're working more on solo time in the crate--taking regular naps in them and eventually overnights. We will also be doing more one-on-one time away from the group to get them ready for their departure.

6 Weeks Old

Where is the time going?! I can't believe I just typed 6 weeks old. The monkeys are getting so big--they're eating their mushy food like pro's, using their potty tray pretty regularly, and being so brave spending more & more time away from mom. We worked on powering up the clicker this past week and will continue that even more this week. They've come out of their pen a lot more to play around the living room, have officially met a few of my other adult dogs, and take regular naps in their own kennels (no fuss). They've been the easiest litter I've had so far in terms of the kennel, they actually quite enjoy them which is always the goal. This week we will start doing short rides in the car to get ready for their vet appointment on Monday the 15th. We will also start working on the leash & collar while continuing with new social exposures.

5 Weeks Old

This week the puppies got a home upgrade. We expanded, added the individual crates, potty tray, and plenty of toys. We are starting to wean them from mom--Holly is the type of mom that would feed them forever so we assist in the gradual separation. They are finally interested in their mushy-weaning food and are getting very active and playful. This upcoming week we will 'power up' our clicker, do some gradual crate introductions, and continue increasing time away from mom and the number of mushy meals daily.

4 Weeks Old

This was a huge developmental week for the puppies--they were just barely awake at 3 weeks and now they're getting around quite nicely and starting to observe their surroundings. Yesterday they got their second deworming, we dremeled nails again, and have been doing our early socialization puppy culture activities  (daily individual cuddle sessions & daily object introductions in the whelping box). Leo definitely reacted to sound during our photo session but I haven't witnessed a full reaction to noise from everyone: when they do I'll introduce the noise exposure (music, startle recovery, gradual build to exposure to disruptive sounds -- i.e. vacuum, kid's yelling and dogs barking (free of charge at my house)...

If you're following along and you look up the puppy culture program or are familiar I've come to do it about half a week to a full week behind for Dachshunds. From experience, they have always hit milestones a little differently than the puppy culture timeline suggests in the early stages.

3 Weeks Old

All eyes are officially open! Leo is still only 90% open so he looks like a big sleepy boy in his pictures. This week we are mostly waiting to see when their sense of hearing comes online as that will be when we start doing more puppy culture tasks with them.

2 Weeks Old

The puppies are officially two weeks old. Eyes aren't quite open yet but I can see that they're starting to in the corners. These first few weeks we've just been tending to mom, tracking weight gain, changing bedding/cleaning, and doing our daily ENS & frequent nail trims. Yesterday they got their first scheduled deworming.
